The 5th day of March already and I'm still waiting for something different to happen!
it is a cold and slippery walk over to the log bay as the cold out flow winds have turned the snow left over from February, to solid ice.
there is the log bay....brrrr
the only spring like thing were the calls of the Red-wing Blackbirds although the birds themselves are pretty much staying down in the shelter of the bushes.
Some cloud moved in mid-day which caused the winds to die down so after lunch....
we walked the dike over at Harrison Bay.
how much lower can the water levels go? You can see on the north side of the bridge that the gravel bars are almost right to the bridge now....also notice the sand dunes that have formed.....nothing in the way of ducks down there because there is no longer any water!
there were some Great Blue Heron across the river - 4 in this photo out of a total of 6 and one Herring Gull....
a couple of pairs of Bald Eagles, this being one.....
and this half of the pair whose nest is near by, in fact as we were about to leave noticed one of them heading to the nest with a stick so they are still working on it.
The hundreds of geese and swans that have been in the fields are no where in sight now. There were only a dozen or so geese out on the river and about the same number of swans, separated into pairs or small family groups here and there.
a Double crested Cormorant was using the new Purple Martin boxes as a perch today....notice the pilings are on dry land now.
have never seen the river this low!
you can tell how chilly it is from this fluffed up House Sparrow....
and here is something interesting....we noticed smoke this afternoon...
appeared to be all along the edge of the river....
and I sure hope that truck out there was somebody official! How it got there I'm not sure, and this is a Wildlife Management Area. I thought the days of seeing a truck out on the estuary ended 20 or so years ago.
