Another kind of strange day in the weather department. It looked nice and sunny (except when the big black clouds moved over the sun and dropped either hail or fat rain drops for a second or two), but it was very windy all day and so cool!!!
so cool in fact that the water levels are still dropping and the top of the uppermost log is now reappearing! So cool too that they are talking about the possibility of frost for tonight and tomorrow night!
Never the less it was a pretty good day for birds…this is one of two female Rufous Hummingbirds at my place today and I have actually seen and heard a number of hummers today, including one that seemed to be chasing after wind blown nesting material!
This Spotted Towhee was one of several seen….
and I couldn’t believe the numbers of Purple Finches!!! This male isn’t as scruffy as the one in yesterday’s posting.
back over at the park I searched in vain for a Spotted Sandpiper – it seems to me they should be back by now….also realized that I haven’t seen a Red-breasted Sapsucker yet and that seems really strange!
I did spot a Western Tanager though – the first of the season – he hasn’t even developed much red on his head yet!
and back at home – the Black-headed Grosbeaks have arrived! At least the males have…haven’t seen a female yet.
here is a closer look of one at the feeder – they’ll be regulars now until some time in August.
The Brown-headed Cowbirds have been here for a while, but today was the first day I managed to get a picture of one…this guy was doing his call where they spread their wings and bend forward – I know they aren’t anybodies favorite birds, due to their parasitic ways but they can’t help it that they evolved that way.
