Busy Pileated Woodpecker

Yesterday was another spring like day but with all the human activity, there wasn't much in the way of bird activity....

the sunshine and warm temperatures have brought out the flowers of the Osoberry (formerly called Indian Plum)

Today wasn't as sunny....

but still very pleasant...

as we were starting out, this male Pileated Woodpecker was on the hydro pole at the start of the dyke

worked his way up to the top....

then flew over to this new snag that is sporting a brand new nesting hole....however he didn't stay there all that long before flying back over towards the Kilby historic site.

love was in the air for this pair of Crows as well.  They will be nest building very soon.

Overhead...

we noticed this flock of gulls circling....I'm hoping some gull expert will be able to identify....their behaviour suggests they were gaining altitude so probably on migration as they quickly disappeared. Most gull species nest inland or in the high arctic.

Speaking of migration....I heard a Western Meadowlark today....couldn't spot it though.

Oregon Junco have been with us all winter, but their numbers do tend to increase during the month of March as many are moving through the area, headed for further north and east.
