Snoozing Swans

A sunny day today although still with those strong winds we've had the last week or so...

water levels are getting lower and lower and the gravel bars are growing making eagle viewing more difficult as they are getting further and further away.

although there were some all day in this area up closer to Morris Valley Road.  Am wondering what that very dark gull on the extreme right is...can't see it well enough to ID it.  Possibly a Western or at least Western cross.

most notable sighting today was this collection of swans....I say 'collection' because...

these appear to be all Trumpeter Swans....

while these, with the all pink bill have to be young Tundra Swans.

what is obvious though is that they are running out of water!

With the winds seeing smaller birds in the riparian habitat has been pretty much non-existent ....

although did catch a glimpse of this Varied Thrush today....

and also a few Black-capped Chickadee.

Great Blue Heron continue to be seen regularly and in fairly high numbers....this young one was over by the swans....

while this one was determinedly strutting along the shore after having chased another one away.

The male Evening Grosbeak was back today and later in the day a female also showed up but am a bit concerned because she seemed to be very young....too young for this time of year.  Still finding it interesting they are showing up singularly rather than in a flock....  and...in the 'we can only hope department' - it was reported today that a female Cardinal was seen at feeders in Cranbrook, B.C.  the first documented sighting of this species in B.C. ever!  I'm still waiting for a real Blue Jay to show up at my feeders.  A few are spotted throughout B.C. every winter.  One of these days!!!
