The 2nd of November. The Bald Eagle Festival is less than 2 weeks away...
and look at where the water levels are still at. After one of the rainiest Octobers on record they just aren't budging....
the site of the viewing tent is down there under water....not that there are many eagles to be seen, but it isn't just the eagles, although we've had a few swans pass through they haven't settled in yet. One of the reason's for the lack of both eagles and swans is the fact that there has been no cold weather up north. Salmon spawn all up and down the coast and as long the eagles can get to those in the northern rivers they have no need to move south. The swans can also take their time moving south.
Unless something drastic happens in the next week or so this could be an eagle festival with no eagles! That of course is an exaggeration. There are some eagles around, just not the hundreds we are used to seeing.
Something we do have are....
Anna's Hummingbirds! I still find it fascinating that we see these birds now, and if it follows last years pattern, will stay visible until early in the new year.
This morning we thought we'd go for a bit of a drive up the road....
first stop was the Chehalis Fish Hatchery were we went for a walk down the river leading to the hatchery.
found an American Dipper......but not one single eagle to be seen.
we were happy to at least find some gulls!
this is the same branch of the Chehalis River that we often canoe up....this seemed to be the end of the trail so turned back and headed up to the Weaver Spawning Channels....
today was the last day this site was open to the public although there were still quite a few salmon, like these Sockeye in the channels...
and several more American Dipper.....but again, not an eagle to be seen. Actually saw more eagles, 3 to be exact, while walking the dogs within our own complex late in the afternoon.
