Damp start to December

Between, rain,'life', and internet issues haven't managed to post anything so far this month, so doing a bit of 'catch up' tonight.

started the month with just a touch of snow....

made for some misty viewing....this photo of Bald Eagles would make a wonderful jigsaw puzzle!

some Varied Thrush that morning as well.

I mentioned a while ago about the work the beaver have been up to over at the park...

well the parks department has noticed too and put up this signage explaining what is going on.

Over at Harrison Bay....

it is getting pretty busy....

Swans moving around.  These were Trumpeter Swans and there were more out on the bay, could hear Tundra's out there too as they have a very different call.

We continue to see more eagle activity along side the river than we've seen other years.

The resident pair are busy working on their nest again.

There were flocks of Canada Geese moving around.

and in the fields the numbers of Mallard have increased significantly and some of the Northern Pintails are now showing up.

around the corner we spotted a flock of what turned out to be Ring-neck Ducks, the first of the season.

There have been some interesting looking gulls - this one is (I'm pretty sure) a Western/glaucous wing hybrid.

There is usually a Great Blue Heron hanging around somewhere.

This young Bald Eagle was keeping an eye out for the competition as there were several eagles as well as gulls with an eye on that particular salmon.

When I spotted this gull I thought I might have something really exciting, but after consulting my field guide, turns out is is just a Glaucous wing gull - but a youngster in it's first winter plumage.

  1. Kathy, thank you for sharing your photos regularly and your thoughts. They are helpful so I can see what is going on from way down here in Bellingham. We try to get up there several times during this time of year to see the eagles.
