Drove over to Kilby today, first time since the major wind storm...
wasn't the nicest day, weather wise but at least it was dry.....
there must have been about 150 Swans scattered along the shore....from the calls, there must have been a lot of Tundra, there were another 50 or so swans on the opposite side of the bay, mainly Trumpeters on that side.
wanted to point out the amount of dry land appearing in the bay. Unfortunately, due to the lack of circulation of water in the bay, caused by the causeway to the log sort, more and more silt is building up, one wonders how long it can even be called a 'bay'!
Now, to the wind damage.....we found we couldn't take our normal walking route as there were just too many felled trees....
this Pileated Woodpecker was feeding on one of the blocking trunks....difficult to see but he actually has his tongue extended, feeding on those bug holes that he would never be able to get to if the tree hadn't broken apart.
here is another look at the Pileated...this is a male as a female doesn't have the red moustache.
Now here is the victim of the wind storm...
for years we've watched this pair of Bald Eagles raise young in that nest....now partially collapsed as most of the tree disappeared....
that is what the tree and nest looked like a month ago...
but nature is resilient. See over at the left of this picture....a new nest is under construction....
Lastly....
managed to capture a photo of a Steller's Jay today. These guys are always around but considering what a bold, brash bird they are, they are very uncooperative as far as having their picture taken.
