The freeze continues....

Another very cold but beautiful day.  Bundled up and went for a walk....

looked pretty much the same way it did yesterday...the wind was less today, so we headed over to the park...

there was a fair amount of open water at the log bay, thanks to a number of underground springs....

lots of Mallards sheltering in the sunshine.

out front of the bay, a pair of Trumpeter Swans....

here is a closer look at the pair, along with a pair of Mallards and a gull.  There were a few eagles spread along the shoreline, but my fingers were going numb about this point, even in gloves, so didn't bother with photos.

on the way back spotted this American Robin....there had been a number of Varied Thrush in the same area.  Another 'unseasonable' bird seen today was a Red-breasted Sapsucker that stopped in our yard momentarily.

A bit later we decided to go for a drive around the area....

stopped to get a picture of the far end of the estuary area...and spotted these....

Hooded Merganser in the water just below me.

Now the following didn't occur in the area of the IBA, but it wasn't all that far away...while driving around we went to a fairly isolated spot  on the Fraser River.  We had been watching the ice floes drifting down the river when we suddenly spotted a little bird right down at the edge of the river...

turned out to be a Ruby-crowned Kinglet....and there wasn't just one.  They kept flying out onto the ice....why I have no idea!

here is one of the little guys, sporting his 'ruby' crown, resting on a rock on the shore before flying back out onto the ice.

  1. I have seen Kinglets doing the same thing at Surrey Lake, there must be food trapped on the ice...just guessing
