Spectacular Day

What a beautiful sunny spring day!

log bay

Despite the beautiful sunshine, it was actually very quiet ‘bird wise’ probably a combination of the sun bringing out more walkers, and the rather brisk breeze….as I’ve mentioned before, wind and birding just don’t mix!

Tree Swallows

There were a few Tree Swallows again – saw a total of 3….not one single duck or goose…

Red-breasted Sapsucker

Some fairly vigorous drumming let to this Red-breasted Sapsucker…there were actually 2 of them, this one drumming on the top of this dead snag had a hollow sound and then there was an answering deeper drum coming from the live cedar tree near by.  I know a pair of Sapsuckers nested in this area last year, it looks like they plan to again this year.

I had spotted the first Turkey Vulture of the season earlier…….

Two other species that are being seen right now in the upper Fraser Valley, and have been seen in this area on a fairly regular basis in the past are:

Mountain Bluebirds

Mountain Bluebirds….

Northern Shrike

and Northern Shrike… watch for Mountain Bluebirds on the pilings, they won’t come near the residential areas….and tend to stay quite low so don’t look up in trees for them, rather look on the tops of low bushes or grass in wide open areas.  Bluebirds are insect eaters and will often hover while they are fly catching.  Shrikes feed on small birds, again they tend to not be high up in trees, more like eye level, but they aren’t shy about going into the residential areas and staking out bird feeders!
